I always love it when people ask me questions about Rubicon and it's purpose. It gives me opportunity to share the vision and clarify anything that someone might be wondering. Here are two questions that I was asked recently:
1. Are there going to be live bands for entertainment on occasion?
Yes. There will be live bands for venues, concerts and other events. In fact, Kevin Max, formerly of DC Talk will be performing in Rubicon this Nov. Local bands will be invited to play as well.
2. Can people meet there with other believers for bible study and fellowship?
Everyone, believers & non-believers (and I hope noone is discriminating according to a person's belief system) can meet in Rubicon to socialize and connect with other people. Regarding bible studies - we will have venues that meet at specific times to teach, discuss and integrate the Bible into everyday living. Most likely, small groups will gather at tables and have opportunities for discussion during those venues. At all other times, it will be a safe place like Starbucks or any other coffee shop in town where everyone is welcome at all times.
One of the benefits of having a new building is more space. Finally, seminar rooms will be available in the existing building for small groups to connect spiritually after they grab their favorite coffee or smoothie in Rubicon.
Rubicon is one more way the vision of SFCC will be fulfilled as we connect with our community in Fredericksburg and surrounding counties to intentionally break down church stereotypes and love and accept people right where they are, without judgment or coercion.
In the weekend message, I quoted a poem that my mother instilled in me as a young child. I think it's made a difference in my determination to finish what I begin. Many people asked for the poem so I've decided to post it here:
Somebody said that it couldn't be done,
But he with a chuckle, replied;
That maybe it couldn't, but he would be one,
Who wouldn't say so 'til he tried.
So he buckled right in with a trace of a grin on his face;
If he worried, he hid it and he started to sing
As he tackled that thing that couldn't be done,
And he did it!

Rubicon is a river in Italy. History tells us that Julius Caesar sat on its banks with a decision to make. He could either risk his life, comfort, and safety to advance and overtake his enemy, or he could play it safe and retreat. In a moment, he chose to “cross the Rubicon,” ultimately defeating his foe and becoming Emperor of Rome. The phrase “crossing the Rubicon” has come to be known as a momentary decision that alters the course of the future. What’s a decision you’ve made in your life that altered your future?
